| Eat or Be Eaten, Medium: Decorated Penis Cakes, Table Cloth, and Phallic Balloons. Explanation: The idea behind this piece was gender role stereotypes. How we get caught up in the notions of who we are supposed to be as female or male, or how to act as feminine or masculine. The idea being, that if we can't eat a cake because it's phallic we're being consumed by our gender roles. Many males refused to eat the cakes several told me it was because it would be considered a "homosexual act to place a penis in his mouth." Where does this come from? I mean it's only a piece of cake, he's not actually fellating another man. I mean, college students turned down homemade cake because they were afraid someone would consider them a homosexual? It doesn't make sense to me, you are what you are; there isn't a direct correlation between the way we eat cake and our sexuality people! We've grown just a little too worried about the way people perceive us. What if someone thinks you're gay? Then what? Just like so many other behaviors, we're a combination of millions of attributes...not a single moment in a single day. |
