Who has many
Medium: fake flowers, rebar and wire
Explanation:
Who has many consists of a week's worth of fake flowers I picked
from cemetery garbage cans around Carbondale, Illinois. My point
was to emphasize the amount of waste created by mourning. All of
the flowers used in the piece came from five different cemeteries.
Walk around a cemetery pay attention to the amount of waste there
is on a weekly basis, if it's a cemetery that is well groomed,
they empty those garbage cans at least once a week.
This amount of waste, is particularly interesting to me because
we're spending money, energy, and even making garbage for people
that don't even live here anymore. How American is that? Even in
the grave we're wasteful. When you think about it though, what
about all the people living hungry? without shelter? We have money
to spend on our dead relatives, but what about our homeless
neighbors?
The symbol I chose for my work was that of Pluto. Pluto was the
roman god of the underworld, and his name means "Who has many". I
thought that fitted this piece well, as a symbol for cemeteries.
I placed this piece in the far corner of a cemetery as to rule
over the shrines that simply couldn't compete with my 25 foot long
and 15 foot wide memorial to disregarded memorial objects.
