Further Explanation:
This piece deals with rebellion
from gender role stratification.
When I think of growing up, I
think of the ideals of a young
lady/preteen my parents encouraged
me to portray. I wasn't supposed
to have a sexuality, masturbation
was considered inappropriate,
pornography was off limits, and
homosexuality was certainly
forbidden. My dolls enforced
these notions too, reflecting
motherhood, secretarial positions,
and other stereotypical feminine
behaviors. However, at a young
age I was very interested in sex
and used my housewife Barbie and
teen Skipper to contemplate sexual
fantasies. So for this book I
took symbols of innocence like
baby dolls and nuns and gave them
a sexuality.
